This introductory course provides an overview of information that adults should understand before working with young children. Topics covered: developmental stages, age appropriate activities for children, positive guidance and discipline, fostering children’s self-esteem, health and safety practices, positive interaction with children, supervision, and detection and reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. This course satisfies the Texas requirement for pre service training before working with young children.

 

3 hours in child development

2 hours in positive guidance (behavior management)

3 hours in health and safety

(3 hours in teacher/child interaction - these hours overlap with guidance and child development)

  1. Typical physical growth patterns of young children

  2. Ways to facilitate children's motor development

  3. The relationship between motor development and cognitive development in young children

  4. The stages of young children's cognitive development

  5. How young children learn

  6. The adult's role in children's learning and development

  7. Ways to help young children learn, including healthful eating practices, disease control, sanitation practices, safe space and equipment, safety practices, recognizing signs of child abuse and neglect, and helping children who have been abused and neglected

  8. Guidelines for handling accidents and injuries

  9. Fire safety precautions
