This course uses the textbook, Keeping the Peace, and you must have a copy to do the course. It is available from us for $12.00. More than one student may share the textbook, but every student must have their own copy of the course book.

Children today are growing up in a frightening world overrun with negative images and violence. You, the day care worker, play a key role in helping children grow into responsible, caring members of our society. This course presents effective ways to help children resolve conflicts and methods for teaching these concepts to very young children. This course includes some of the most fun, educational, and innovative activities we have seen!

Chapters cover: Setting the Stage for Success; Interacting with Children; Activities

1 hour in behavior management

4 hours in curriculum planning

6 hours in observing and recording children's behavior

(6 hours in teacher/child interaction - these hours overlap with curriculum, behavior management, and observing children's behavior)

 

  1. Program objectives to help children learn non-aggressive ways to deal with problems

  2. How children can get confusing and mixed value messages from what adults around them say and do

  3. Why it is important for adults who work with young children to think through their own values

  4. The importance of clear communication between adult care providers and the children in their care

  5. Ways to set up the early childhood facility environment to minimize conflict

  6. Reasons to set limits for children

  7. Important things to consider then setting limits for children

  8. Strategies for evaluating teaching and play materials that teach children cooperative values

  9. Strategies for dealing with materials that glamorize violence

  10. Alternatives to war play that stress cooperation

  11. How books can be used to help children learn constructive conflict resolution skills

  12. Ways to help children develop empathy

  13. How to make adult intervention unnecessary as children become competent to manage their own conflicts

  14. Activities that help children learn to cooperate with each other, respect the choices of others, respect the rights of others, value themselves and each other, develop empathy, trust others, and act in harmony with others
