Lesson 1: Elements of a Quality After-School Program

After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to:

  • list characteristics of a quality after-school program
  • identify who should plan afternoons that you and the children will enjoy
  • identify positive discipline techniques to use in after-school programs
  • describe how to support children’s developmental needs and emotional safety

Lesson 2: Addressing Common Problems

After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to:

  • describe problems caused by cliques and how to deal with them
  • explain how to conduct cooperative, non-competitive games and activities, and how they can benefit children
  • identify ways to help children deal with anger and frustration and work out their differences in non-violent ways
  • describe strategies for dealing with children who bully and helping children who are bullied
  • identify characteristics of an anti-bias curriculum

Lesson 3: Games and Activities

After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to:

  • explain the nature and goals of an after-school program through a written purpose statement
  • list indoor and outdoor activities as part of a 5-day after-school program plan
