Children with Special Needs: Autism Spectrum Disorder Course Description: 

This course applies to preschoolers. 

Study the characteristics associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, how children with autism learn, how their ways of learning differ from those of non-autistic children; the function or reason for unusual behaviors of children with autism; and strategies to help children with autism achieve their highest potential in an inclusive classroom. Section on interaction with families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder included. See the course topics listed below for more information on what is covered. Note: this course includes activities to be done with children. The children do not need to have Autism Spectrum Disorder to do the activities. You may do these activities with ANY children -- those in a childcare or preschool setting, your own children, neighbors, relatives, etc, but you must do the activities with children to get credit for this course.

Learning Outcomes: After completing Children with Special Needs: Autism Spectrum Disorder you will be able to identify behavioral characteristics of autism; distinguish between behavioral characteristics of autism; and describe goals, objectives and environments that best support each child.
