Maine Childcare Training Requirements

All Care Courses are accepted by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for hours of ongoing training for those who work in child care facilities, nursery schools and family child care programs. This includes directors, head teachers, operators, providers, staff, substitutes, volunteers, group leaders, aides, assistants and licensees.

All Care Courses are accepted for the 90 contact hours of in-service training needed to renew a Professional Teacher Certificate or the 45 contact hours of in-service training to renew a Certified Educational Technician. One clock hour = one contact hour.

Please note the in-service training may not have been used previously to renew the same certificate and must have been earned within the five years prior to the renewal.

All Care Courses are accepted for Ed Tech upgrades from one level to the next.

For Ed Tech levels:

  • Ed Tech I – requirement is a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Ed Tech II – 900 contact hours (equals 900 clock hours)
  • Ed Tech III – 1,350 contact hours (equals 1,350 clock hours)

Fifteen contact hours = 1 college semester hour. Educators can use a combination of both semester and contact hours to fulfill the Ed Tech level requirements.

What our Maine students say

"I received my order on the 3rd and am very pleased with prompt delivery and the course content (all three courses). I have been an Early Head Start (prenatal to three) home visitor for 8 and 1/2 years and my first experience with Care Courses was three years ago when I needed CEUs to renew my CDA and the self-paced courses worked well for me. Each program year we are required to complete 40 hours of training and although several of the hours will be completed through agency trainings I wanted some training in areas that are directly related to areas of concern with my current caseload. The one course [Nurturing Children's Self-Esteem] that I am now taking do that. Thank you."

"I have taken several of your online courses [Managing Health and Safety] and have enjoyed all them. I have learned a lot as well and it has brought so much to my attention that really until these courses I did not give much thought about. Some of the information was a good refresher for me. The navigation on your site is easy to follow. I like the way it’s set up and the self-checks. I will be ordering another soon!"
