        Learning Outcomes
        Lesson 1: How Children Develop
        After completing Lesson 1, you will be able to
        
            - explain basic       principles of children’s development;
- describe the milestones that       indicate different stages in each developmental domain;
- explain the       importance of nutrition for children’s development;
- explain       the importance of opportunity for children’s development and the lack of opportunity as a risk factor for developmental delays;
- identify strategies for recognizing and reporting the characteristics associated with developmental delays and developmental disabilities. 
Lesson 2: The Developing Child: Infants and Toddlers
        After completing Lesson 2, you will be able to
        
            - outline the milestones and typical characteristics (behaviors and  skill development) of infants and toddlers in all developmental domains; 
- describe the  needs of infants and toddlers; 
- identify techniques for meeting the needs of infants and  toddlers. 
Lesson 3: The Developing Child: the Preschool and Transition Years
        After completing Lesson 3, you will be able to
        
            - outline the milestones along  the path of development in children between 2 ½ and 6 years of age;
- identify typical  developmental characteristics (behaviors and skill development) of children  between 2 ½ and 6 years of age in all developmental domains.
Lesson 4: Positive Guidance
        After completing Lesson 4, you will be able to
        
            - explain what is       meant by positive guidance;
- identify the       goals of positive guidance;
- explain       techniques of positive guidance; 
- identify ways       that adult behaviors, attitudes, and interactions can promote children’s       positive social emotional development and guide positive behavior; 
- describe       positive guidance strategies and opportunities for interaction that lead       to young children’s healthy concept of self, self-regulation, and       appropriate interaction with others. 
Lesson 5: Routines, Schedules, and Transitions
        After completing Lesson 5, you will be able to
        
            - name the elements of a typical       daily schedule for early childhood programs; 
- explain why routines are important       for children’s development; 
- identify strategies for developing       daily routines in an early childhood program; 
- list reasons why transitions are       often troublesome; 
- identify strategies for pleasant       transitions that contribute to children’s development. 
Lesson 6: Promoting Child Development Through Activities
        After completing Lesson 6, you will be able to
        
            - explain what is meant by curriculum and developmentally appropriate curriculum;
- identify guidelines for       developmentally appropriate curriculum planning;
- explain       how curriculum planning relates       to child development and fits within a daily schedule;
- identify goals       for young children’s development at your early childhood program;
- list strategies       for promoting development and learning by encouraging children’s active       interaction with their environment;
- choose       materials, toys, and games that will support creative play and exploration       and create a learning environment.
